Article I – Name and Purpose
Section 1. Chapter Name
The name of this chapter shall be the Prometheus Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools, affiliation number 00009086, granted by the National Council of the National Honor Society, duly signed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. In Greek Mythology, Prometheus, which is translated to “forethought,” is a Titan god of fire, known for his intelligence and being a champion to humankind.
Section 2. Chapter Purpose
The object of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in all students of Lakewood High School.
Article II – Selection of Members
Section 1. Membership in this chapter shall be based upon scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

Section 2. Member Eligibility
To be eligible for membership in this chapter, the candidate must have been in attendance for a period of one semester in this school and a member of the junior or senior class. Candidates must also demonstrate scholarship by maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA (unweighted) and 3.5 GPA (weighted) – no rounding is permitted. Any student meeting these criteria shall be offered the chance to apply to become a member of the National Honor Society.
Section 3. Member Selection
A. All students who meet such standards shall then be considered for admission based on their character, leadership, and service credentials and recommendations made by the NHS Faculty Council.
B. The Council will rate students’ service, leadership, and character by rating them from 1 to 4. Additionally, students must write an essay in which they exemplify the ways that they demonstrate character, leadership, and service through extra-curricular activities.
C. In accordance with NHS (Prometheus Chapter) policy, a student must pass a referral check, which is done by the NHS Prometheus Chapter Faculty Council. The following referrals will disqualify a student for admittance into the Prometheus Chapter of the National Honor Society, if received during the 10th, 11th or 12th grades: cheating, forgery, stealing (adult property), drugs/alcohol, weapons. All other referrals will be reviewed by the NHS Faculty Council and may disqualify a student for the Prometheus Chapter of NHS, depending on the circumstances.
D. Students who are not selected for membership may appeal to the faculty committee to reconvene and assess whether a procedural error has been made. Further appeals may be made to the principal if the student is not satisfied with the decision of the faculty committee.
Article III – Membership and Termination of Membership
Section 1. Any member who falls below the standards of the National Honor Society, which were the basis of his or her selection to the society, shall be promptly warned and put on probation. If the member, after being placed on probation fails to redeem him or herself, then he or she will be dismissed from the National Honor Society or will not be allowed to graduate with National Honor Society credits. A flagrant violation of the National Honor Society expectations, including but not limited to engaging in egregious behavior or completing fewer than five service hours in a semester, could result in dismissal without a probationary period.

Section 2. Dismissal
Faculty Council shall vote to approve dismissal, and members have a right to appeal a dismissal within five days of notice. Once a member is dismissed, they may not reapply for admittance or be reinstated. Members may be disqualified from graduating with NHS honors, up until and including the final day of school.
Article IV – Bylaws
Section 1. Additions or changes to the bylaws require a two-thirds vote of the active members of this chapter of the National Honor Society and approval by the advisor.
Section 2. A quorum of half of the members must be present to make the change valid.
Section 3. A change in or an addition to the bylaws may be proposed by any active member at any meeting. The proposal will then go to the officers committee for debate, and then voted on by the committee. If the proposal receives a majority vote by the committee, a discussion shall be held at the next National Honor Society meeting.

- Readily showing courtesy by assisting others

- Resourcefulness by proposing new solutions to problems, applying principles, and making suggestions
- Demonstrating leadership in promoting school activities
- Exercising influence on peers to uphold school ideals
- Contributing ideas that improve the civic life of the school
- Ability to delegate responsibilities
- Exemplifying positive qualities
- Inspiring positive behavior in others
- Demonstrating academic initiative
- Successfully holding school offices or positions of responsibility, conducting business efficiently and effectively, and being reliable and dependent without prodding
- Demonstrating leadership in the classroom, at work, and in activities
- Being thoroughly dependable in any responsibility he or she accepts

- Taking criticism graciously and accepting recommendations willingly
- Constantly exemplifying desirable qualities of personality
- Upholding principles of morality and ethics
- Cooperating by complying with school regulations
- Demonstrating the highest standards of honesty and reliability
- Showing courtesy, concern, and respect for others.
- Observing instructions and rules, punctuality and faithfulness in obligations
- Having powers of concentration and sustained attention as shown by perseverance and applications to studies
- Manifesting truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules, avoiding cheating in written work, and showing unwillingness to profit by the mistake of others
- Actively helping to rid the school of any bad influences

- The regular meetings of this chapter of the National Honor Society shall be held at biweekly, on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month, from 10:20am to 10:45am during the school year and on days designated by the officers and advisor and approved by administration officials.
- Special meetings or a change of meeting date may occur with approval of the president, advisor, and administration officials.
- The officers of this chapter shall conduct all meetings and all members are expected to behave in a respectful and appropriate manner.
- Any member whose behavior during a meeting is deemed inappropriate may be asked by the advisor to leave the meeting.
- Attendance at meetings is mandatory – 3 unexcused absences will result in a member being put on probation
- If a member is unable to attend a meeting, they must provide an excuse in writing to the advisor, who will determine if the absence is excused or unexcused
- In the event of an absence, members are expected to find out what they missed by reviewing the PowerPoint on the NHS website.
Condition B: Service Hours
- The chapter shall determine one or more service projects for each year.
- All members shall regularly participate in these projects.
- These projects shall have the following characteristics: fulfill a need within the school or community; have the support of the administration and the faculty; be appropriate and educationally defensible; and be well planned, organized, and executed.
- Each member shall have the responsibility for choosing and participating in an individual service project which reflects his or her particular talents and interests and as approved by the chapter advisor. This is in addition to the chapter events or projects to which all members contribute.
- The chapter shall publicize and promote its projects in a positive manner.
- 20 service hours per semester must be completed to remain a member of NHS (in the semester of induction, the service hour requirement is 10 hours)
- 6 documented hours of tutoring per semester must be completed (ELP or arrangements made with schools or individuals)
